The smoothly polished stone has a dense pattern of mushroom-like fossil inclusions amid small circular roundels in gray, yellow and white on an opaque bluish-black body, causing a dramatic effect reminiscent of a moonscape, or the unfathomable sea, where the fossil inclusions unfurl like jellyfish, trailing through the depths.

WF 112 An Amber Figure of a Recumbent Boy And Carp

十八/十九世紀 蜜蠟雕童子戲鯉

18/19th century

The boy is reclining on a large lotus leaf floating on crested waves. He is wearing long-sleeved robes and holding a large carp with open mouth in both hands. His face is smiling and his shaved head has one tuft of hair.
The amber is of a warm orange-yellowish tone.
Length: 6.3 cm

Provenance: A Dutch private collection

Fish symbolise a wish for abundance and affluence, as the word for 'fish', yu 魚, is a homonym for yu 餘, meaning 'surplus'. Thus, a boy with a fish symbolises a wish for many children. The carp, li 鯉, has its own symbolic associations.
