ALTARS
An altar is any structure upon which sacrifices or other offerings are made for reliqious purposes. Altars are usually found in churches, chapels, old temples and other sacred places. In many cultures from ancient times to the present day they were used in the reliqions. Most altars are carrying their tabernacle, the object in which the sacred bread (chalice and ciborium) is protected. The altar-cross (cruxifix) and a set of altar-candlesticks are decorating the offer-table. In many altars there are kept the relics of a saint (the whole altar is devoted to this saint): it is the Altar-stone.There are various kind of altars: in wood, plaster,brass,sandstone,marble. In the catholic and anglican churches the altars are supplied with an upper hart (in the middle the tabernacle). Eind zestiger, begin zeventiger jaren vorige eeuw, direct na het decreet van Het Vaticaans Concilie om de liturgie radicaal te herzien, begon Joannes Peters kerkelijke attributen te verzamelen.
Als misdienaar al was hij gefascineerd door de pracht en praal in religieuze gebouwen.
Nadat hij zijn middelbare opleiding aan het gymnasium bij de franciscanen in Megen (N.Br.) had voltooid kwam hij –al dan niet toevallig- in het toenmalige klooster te Alverna tot de eerste aankoop van drie levensgrote heiligenbeelden. Hij kocht ze voor 100 gulden.
Vanaf dat moment was Fluminalis geboren…..
Al snel doorkruiste hij –als leraar- met z’n auto en aanhanger de BENELUX.
De kontakten met kerkelijke instituten en handelaren werden gelegd en wekelijks werden duizenden kilometers afgelegd door Frankrijk, Engeland en drie keer per jaar door Spanje. Daarnaast was Jan vooral in het kloosterrijke België als liefhebber en gedreven koopman een graag geziene gast….
In 1981 kocht hij van het bisdom ’s Hertogenbosch de voormalige middeleeuwse RK kerk te Horssen (Gld.). Dit gebouw liet hij onder eigen beheer totaal restaureren en maakte er naast de winkel in Batenburg –waar alles begon- een ongeëvenaarde expositieruimte van.
Tegenwoordig resideert zijn bedrijf in een groot fabrieksgebouw (5000 m2). Dit pand is eveneens geheel in stijl gebracht en omvat voor liefhebbers een waar scala aan religieuze kunst in de breedste zin van het woord….
Fluminalis betekent “…bij de stroom, bij de rivier…”
Tussen twee rivieren (Maas en Waal) floreert het bedrijf als nooit tevoren.
Als grootste in z’n soort binnen deze specifieke branche is Fluminalis wereldberoemd geworden. Klanten komen werkelijk uit alle werelddelen.
Sinds 1972 werden door Fluminalis 51 kloosters in Nederland, België en Frankrijk totaal ontruimd; 26 grote parochiekerken en 81 kapellen verkochten hun hele inventaris aan Fluminalis. Ook werden nog eens van 231 gebouwen- met- een- religieus- karakter grotere delen van de inboedel overgenomen.
Uit 39 kerktorens verwijderde Fluminalis tot op heden 19 torenuurwerken en liefst 87 kerkklokken….
