A spectacular marble sculpture depicting a majestic griffin with a Latin inscription engraved on the book, almost as if to mimic the Lion of St. Mark. The inscription: “VNVS ANIMVS DVPLEX NATURA” (in Latin, often rendered with indistinct V and U) literally translates as: “One spirit (or mind), dual nature” The piece comes from an important private collection in the Venice area. In the past, it was certainly used as a base for a holy water font. Its quality and size allow it to be used as an indoor sculpture. A sublime work, more unique than rare.
